Providing essential information on how to get there, what to expect, and what makes this national park so remarkable.
The dried out salt pan "Sossusvlei" derives from a mixture of Nama and Afrikanns, roughly translating to "dead-end marsh". Why is it named this? Well, the Tsauchab river died after the sand dunes displaced it.
Sossusvlei is renowned for its otherworldly landscapes, with towering sand-red dunes that seem to touch the sky. The sand exhibits a red tint due to the presence of iron oxide, also referred to as rust. This unique crimson shade becomes more pronounced as you journey inland from the coastline.
Big Daddy
This Dune is the most famous of the dunes in Sossusvlei. It stands at a staggering height of 325 meters and is a must-visit. Climbing big daddy is a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Located roughly 400 kilometers southwest of Windhoek, you will find the Namib Naukluft National Park. How do I get there from the airport? There are several taxis driving around the major cities. However, due to Deadvlei’s remote location, hiring a vehicle will be beneficial. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, although not necessary for navigating the terrain leading to the dunes and Deadvlei.
